Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
