Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the plan.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The official explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Discussions

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict governance of the territory

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of the population want the conflict to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the western district, sector and zone areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated another two dead people had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers stated.
