Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
