Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Unprecedented Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo New Year Sale
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.
The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the business owner, a familiar participant at the annual new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Past
Following the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated in no time."
This latest acquisition tops his own record purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to surpass his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.
The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Swift Service
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction was finished.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one satisfied patron.
