Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored eighty-six opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match since guard Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded 86 opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this."
The Trail Blazers additionally won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
