Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others got wounded in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters went into the property near the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location showed the property turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.

The wounded by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the doorway and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
