Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the day before his 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization said it respected his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," the company commented.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to release its files on the case.
The bill will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for approval. He has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the matter following pushback from his followers.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-connected emails made public by the legislative panel last week referenced several well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to connect the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were made available with the wider community, Summers said he took "total ownership for my poor choice to continue communicating with the financier".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in DC where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.
Summers joined the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
