Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Background on Conviction
