A minimum of 64 people died in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
