The incident happened on Monday morning when an IED placed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee indicated that one theory under investigation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Site of the Attack

Officials have been dispatched to the site, which is said to be in a south district of the capital.

Accounts suggest the explosion took place in a parking area adjacent to a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event echoes other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are not formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The war has witnessed shadowy operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
